Bold Future Records & ‘Music in the Mountains’ is pleased to present Brenton Foster 6tet on their The Nature Of Light Tour throughout Australia this September and October. After feature concerts at the Stonnington and Melbourne International Jazz Festivals, the band celebrates their second album, The Nature Of Light, with a run of shows across south-eastern Australia. The Nature Of Light followed Brenton’s 2016 release, Two Cities, which was nominated for Best Jazz Album at 2016’s The Age Music Victoria Awards.

Brenton might not be well known outside of Melbourne, however, has featured on numerous recordings, including those by afrobeat-meet-space-jazz outfit The Shaolin Afronauts and Australian folk-rock wordsmith Max Savage. Brenton is a founding member of the piano trio, Refraction, whose debut album, As We Were, was nominated for Best Jazz Album in 2015’s The Age Music Victoria Awards. Their third studio album, Reimagined, was released in June earlier this year.

Brenton has supported artists such as Sting and Jessica Mauboy, and shared the stage with Australian and international jazz icons, including Bob Mintzer, Mike Nock, Joe Chindamo and James Morrison. He is a mainstay of fan-favorite festivals and has appeared at the Melbourne and Wellington International Jazz Festivals, Stonnington Jazz Festival, and Falls Festival.

“Simply put, a modern jazz triumph… Foster is quietly forging a path to the upper echelon of the contemporary jazz world.”

Chelsea Wilson (PBS FM)

“Brenton Foster is one of the foremost pianists in Australia right now.”

Ross McHenry (The Shaolin Afronauts)

“Foster’s style is potent and vigorous”

John McBeath, The Weekend Australian

Performing songs from the new record, alongside some re-imagined favourites from the Great American Songbook, the Brenton Foster 6tet feature some of Melbourne’s finest jazz musicians and improvisers:

Brenton Foster – piano, vocals

Gideon Brazil – saxophone

Tom Jovanovic – trumpet

Nick Pietsch – trombone

Jordan Tarento – double bass

Aaron McCoullough – drums

This will be Brenton Foster’s first time playing in the Blue Mountains so ‘Music in the Mountains’ figured that the newly reopened Mechanics Institute in Lawson would be THE place to bring some fresh imaginative jazz through the Mountains. If you haven’t stopped in Lawson for a while, this is a thriving local hub of activity and one of the best places to grab a coffee, have a drink and grab a bite to eat. The Mechanics Institute hall is only a few minutes walk from the Lawson Train Station, as well as Lawson’s cafes & restaurants, and with recent upgrades, is ready to continue its tradition of hosting world-class music. Celebrate the reopening of the Mechanics Institute with ‘Music in the Mountains’ and the Brenton Foster 6tet, Saturday, September 30th.
