Renowned pianist, improviser, composer and Steinway Artist, David Braid is the winner of two Canadian Grammy Awards, and 2 Canadian Academy Awards for his work in the recent Chet Baker-Ethan Hawke film Born to Be Blue.

He is in Australia to perform the genre-bending music from FLOW, his own composition, accompanied by the internationally acclaimed Penderecki String Quartet.

As a jazz pianist, David Braid has collaborated with classical musicians in the past and while there is a lot of complexity in Flow, there is also a balance: the music is quite accessible on the surface, with varied contemporary jazz idioms held together by the string quartet, and a friendly harmonic palette.

Harnessing aspects of Western classical, jazz, folk, and ancient forms, such as the Chinese concept of qi (energy flow) and the Ancient Greek concept of pneuma (‘breath’ in the context of ‘spirit’ or ‘soul’), Braid has composed music with a new formula combining the infinite possibilities of scripted improvisation positioned within well-crafted composition.

Having established a reputation as one of his country’s ‘renaissance men when it comes to music’ (Ottawa Citizen), Braid has excelled in a diverse range of styles and has an ability to communicate at high levels as a composer and performer.

Delivering a sonic clarity and intimacy, this concert is highly recommended for those interested in new directions in classical-jazz fusion.
