Join us for FREEDMAN JAZZ 2017, the thrilling concert that decides the winner of the prestigious 2017 Freedman Jazz Fellowship at the Sydney Opera House. Be there as this year’s winner is announced!

Three of Australia’s brightest jazz talents will have the opportunity to “play off” for the $20,000 cash prize awarded to a jazz artist 35 years of age and under. The fellowship enables the winner to undertake a career-enhancing creative project. ABC Jazz has also contributed three days of studio time to record, edit and mix a recording, making this the most prestigious prize in jazz.

This year’s finalists are:

Nick Garbett, in concert with The Vampires
Ellen Kirkwood, with special guests Kristin Berardi, vocals and Sandy Evans, saxophones and the 13-piece Sirens Big Band
Emma Stephenson, performing with Kristin Berardi, vocals, and Hieronymus Trio Nick Henderson, bass, Oli Nelson, drums

Hosted by MC Penny Lomax and featuring special guest performance by 2010 Freedman Jazz Fellow Ben Hauptmann, guitar with special guests Jonathan Zwartz, bass and James Waples, drums. This will be a spectacular showcase not to be missed. The three finalists will perform live at the Sydney Opera House, with the winner decided by distinguished judges Stu Hunter, Mike Nock ONZM and Dr Phillip Johnston on the night
