Greg Poppleton brings back the upbeat, glamorous, devil-may-care, Jazz Age attitude of the decadent 1920s to Foundry616 on Thursday 19 January.
Fast approaching 1 million YouTube views, Greg is Australia’s only authentic 1920s – 1930s singer, totally uninfluenced by contemporary music. His passion for classic jazz goes back to age three when he saw Louis Armstrong on TV.
An award-winning swing and jazz broadcaster on 22 radio stations, Greg has played opposite some of Hollywood’s Academy Award winners in historic stories. He was in the running for the band leader role in Baz Luhrmann’s Great Gatsby.
‘They Didn’t Believe Me’ from Greg’s new album ‘Back In Your Own Backyard’ was picked for the soundtrack of a new German-Israeli movie co-production, The Cake Maker.
Greg’s Bakelite Broadcasters are the real deal in hot 1920s jazz.
Paul Furniss – soprano sax, alto sax and clarinet – played for the Sidney Bechet Society in New York City, the famous Graeme Bell Band and Tom Baker’s San Francisco Jazz Band.
Geoff Power – sousaphone and trumpet – ARIA nominee, ten US tours playing at the Bix Beidebecke Festival and with the Vince Giordano Swing Orchestra in New York.
Grahame Conlon – banjo, guitar and ukelele – plays in the Mellotones. Honed his 1920s-30s chops in the Adelaide Wonderband led by the legendary Sybil Graham.
Adam Barnard – drums and washboards – master of the blocks and choke. Drummer for Mick Conway, Ignatius Jones’ Jalousie, The Jugalug String Band and The Fabulous Rhythm Boys alumnus.
“Captures the 1920s – 1930s vocal style to perfection”
Kevin Jones, jazz critic 102.5 Fine Music Sydney FM and formerly of The Australian
“Absolutely flooring. Greg Poppleton’s 1920s – 1930s jazz and swing always hits the spot. So authentic.”
Women’s Vintage Radio (U.S)
“Damn, I wish I had known you when we had a theatre. We would have called you over to perform with us in a minute! Your great voice, your ability to “sell a song” and your particular energy came across as completely American while sounding Australian! And that trio is an absolute knockout.”
Lance Belville, Writer / Theater Director, San Francisco
Greg says, “This is our first show at Foundry 616 and we’ll be doing our Charleston, 1920s jazz cabaret and classic New Orleans show people just love. These are the shows we do in our regular Gin Mill Social cabaret appearances, at the Sydney Festival many years ago, and most recently at the Waiheke International Jazz Festival in New Zealand and five years headlining the sell-out annual Great Art Deco Ball. We’re very excited to be invited to play at Foundry616 with its cosy atmosphere, bar and excellent food. Come along for dinner, bring some friends and we promise you an evening you’ll totally enjoy.”
